Welcome to the Gulu Peace Gardening Project Blog!

My name is Olel Emmy Wokorach and I was born in 1990. I and my family live in Gulu, Northern Uganda, where a war took place from 1986 to 2006 between the Lord’s Resistance Army and the Government of Uganda. Now as my community rebuilds from this armed conflict, I want to contribute to the reconstruction and recovery process. I started my “peace garden” project on about a half an acre of land in Gulu town in 2013 shortly after my graduation from Gulu University.  

What is “Peace Gardening?”

·         Peace gardening is based on a combination of plant science and creative art

·         Peace gardening deals with raising tree and fruit seedlings, propagating vegetables and flowers in old flour sacks, plastic tins, containers and recycled water bottles

·         Peace gardening deals with conserving both medicinal and ornamental plants close to extinction due to war, soil damage and climate change.

·         Peace gardening is the practical application of lessons in biology, agriculture, and entrepreneurship.

·         Peace gardening also promotes biodiversity, and breeding animals (such as rabbits and guinea pigs) on small scale.

·         Peace gardening promotes positive climate change, employment and sustainable livelihoods
